The Silent Hour
Silence fills the hospital room. Outside, rain falls steadily against the window, marking the slow passage of time. On the bed, a young child lies weakly, connected to an IV line. Beside her rests a closed Qur'an, a quiet reminder of hope in a moment shaped by uncertainty.
Her mother sits nearby, gazing through the rain-streaked window. She says little. Her worries are carried not in words, but in the stillness of her presence. Like many parents watching over a sick child, all she can do is wait, hope, and pray.
The child is one of thousands of Indonesians affected by Dengue, a mosquito-borne disease that continues to pose a serious public health challenge across the country. In 2023, Indonesia recorded more than 114,000 dengue cases and over 800 deaths. During the first quarter of 2024 alone, reported cases tripled compared to the same period the previous year, reaching 43,271 cases with 343 deaths (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2024).
Behind these statistics are families living through moments of fear, uncertainty, and hope. Every medical examination, every blood test, and every passing hour carries the quiet hope that recovery will come.
These photographs grew out of a personal experience—one that is shared by many families across Indonesia. While every story is different, the uncertainty, waiting, and hope often feel the same. All photographs were taken with a Samsung A51 smartphone.
