Cianjur-Quake
On November 21, 2022, a mighty earthquake jolted Indonesia's primary Java Island, leaving in its wake a tragic toll: over 330 lives lost, thousands wounded, and even the towering structures of Jakarta, situated 100 kilometers away, swayed in its formidable tremor.
Registering at a magnitude of 5.6, the earthquake struck in close proximity to the city of Cianjur, a region notorious for its susceptibility to calamities within Indonesia. This seismic event caused a catastrophic cascade, reducing hundreds of edifices to rubble. The count of damaged structures has surged to 2,345, a testament to the quake's destructive force. Educational institutions have also borne the brunt, with Islamic boarding schools, vocational high schools, elementary, middle, and high schools all counting among the casualties.
As reported by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), this earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi), was triggered by the dynamic motion along the Cimandiri fault. This active sliding fault stretches about 100 km, running from the mouth of the Cimandiri River at Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi Regency, and extending northeast through Cianjur, West Bandung, and Subang.
The district of Cianjur stands as one of the most perilous zones in Indonesia, beset by recurring floods, landslides, droughts, and a medley of seismic disturbances including earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions, as documented by the Indonesia Disaster Risk Index.
